Eurasian Economic Union develops toolkit to respond to sanctions

MINSK,14 October (BelTA) – The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) has developed a toolkit of six measures to deal with the sanctions pressure, Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Petrishenko told the media following the web-based meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, BelTA has learned.
“These are specific approaches that we will apply having launched this mechanism,” he said.
Igor Petrishenko recalled that the relevant decision in the EAEU was originally suggested by the Belarusian president. “It was discussed in detail at the previous meeting. Instructions were given to the Board to work it out. We held several iterations at the expert level, considered this issue twice at the EEC Council. We have reached a consensus at this stage. We outlined six measures; a corresponding instruction was signed by the heads of state. It will be formalized,” the deputy prime minister said.
In his words, the mechanism will be the following: any request from one of the member states will be thoroughly analyzed. The proposals will be submitted to the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, which will decide on the launch of these six measures. “These are consultations, assessment of the damage to the country which suffers from economic sanctions, and the multiplier effect on the entire EAEU, negotiations with third countries and a number of others. It is very important that we will collectively respond to unjustified economic pressure from various countries,” said Igor Petrishenko.
In this words, this is not just some kind of moral support, but concrete joint steps. It is possible that joint response to such things will be polished in the future. “I think this is only the first stage. We will see how the situation will unfold in the future,” said the deputy prime minister.
